FORE!
Valid handicaps require us to submit acceptable scores. What are they? I thought you never ask.
According to Rule 2.1 Acceptability of Scores, A score is acceptable for handicap purposes if the round has been played (I’ll do some paraphrasing to keep it short):
- In an authorized format of play (playing your own ball)
- with someone
- by the Rules of Golf
- on a golf course with a Course Rating and Slope Rating
- during the active season
The USGA lists six examples of when scores are not acceptable for handicap purposes, ex: being coached on the course or playing with non-conforming clubs to name just two. See the complete list in Rule 2.1a Clarifications – Scores Not Acceptable for Handicap Purposes.
Today’s question digs a little deeper into Rule 2.
Question #2
An EMGA member strikes it rich in MEGA MILLIONS and donates a bizallion dollars to renovate Blue and Silver over the summer months. We’re talking cart paths, satellite sprinkler system, bunker restoration, tree and flower bed planting, etc. The Club only has the “Winter 18” open for play (Silver, Holes 1-6, 16-18 and the Blue 10-18.) Which score(s), if any, can you submit with your partner for handicapping purposes? Select all that apply.
- Silver Front 9-hole score using Net Par for holes not played
- Silver Back 9-hole score using Net Par for holes not played
- Blue Back 9-hole score
- None
Question #1
A player is expected to:
- Act with integrity
- Submit all acceptable scores to provide reasonable evidence of their demonstrated ability.
- Submit acceptable scores for handicap purposes as soon as possible after the round is completed and before midnight local time.
- Play by the Rules of Golf
- All of the above
Whoa! Many thanks to the THIRTY-TWO members that responded to our first question. Most of you selected the correct answer: e. All of the Above. See Rules of Handicapping, Rule 1.1 description.
