2026 EMGA Rules & Rules Refresher #3

FORE!

Rules of Handicapping Rule 3 Adjustment of Hole Scores states that a score for handicap purposes after you have a handicap established should not be overly influenced by one or two bad hole scores.  These “bad” hole scores aren’t “acceptable” if they exceed your allowable maximum score based on your Course Handicap and handicap stroke on a given hole.  Your maximum adjusted hole score is a Net Double Bogey.   It’s a rather simple equation:

Par of the hole + 2 strokes + Any handicap stroke(s) you receive = Net Double Bogey

If you use the GHIN App for hole-by-hole scoring, it’ll do this calculation for you.  Be careful if you use other scoring apps to keep score.  My Garmin Approach S20 Watch hasn’t been updated to the new tee colors, combination tees or the Stroke Index Allocation (aka Handicapping of holes).

Question #3

Ah, it’s nice summer day, you’re playing extremely well, and you plan to submit today’s Blue course score for handicap because you only use sand to repair divots.  Your Course Handicap is a 21. On the last two holes, you fold like a cheap lawn chair with a triple (6) and a snowman (8) on holes #17 and #18.  Men’s Handicap for Blue #17 is a “13” and for #18, a “3”.  What are your adjusted scores for these last two holes?

  1. 5, 6
  2. 5, 7
  3. 5, 8
  4. 6, 6
  5. 6, 7
  6. 6, 8

Question #2

An EMGA member strikes it rich in MEGA MILLIONS and donates a bizallion dollars to renovate Blue and Silver over the summer months.  We’re talking cart paths, satellite sprinkler system, bunker restoration, tree and flower bed planting, etc.  The Club only has the “Winter 18” open for play (Silver, Holes 1-6, 16-18 and the Blue 10-18.)  Which score(s), if any, can you submit having played in a stroke match against your buddy for handicapping purposes?  Select all that apply.

  1. Silver Front 9-hole score using Net Par for holes not played
  2. Silver Back 9-hole score using Net Par for holes not played
  3. Blue Back 9-Hole score
  4. None

Thanks for the THIRTY-FIVE responses on Question 2.  This question tripped up a number of you. Even though the holes played were the “Winter 18” the question clearly states the construction was in the summer months so this was during the Active Season.

Some may be thinking, “That’s a bullshit question!”.  Perhaps, but no one can say that better than this lady:  https://www.youtube.com/shorts/C8ciCKv3KuU

The correct answer is “c. Blue Back 9-hole.”  It’s the only selection that meets all the criteria.

Ref: Rule 2.2b Minimum Number of Holes Played for Score to be Acceptable For a 9-hole Score.  For a 9-hole score to be acceptable for handicap purposes, all 9 holes must be played.  (Added note) Note:  An acceptable 9-hole score must be played over 9-holes with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating (see Rule 2.1). The Silver scores aren’t acceptable because these holes 1-6, 16-18 don’t have a 9-hole Course and Slope Rating.

BUT… (note the big but) there is a highly unlikely scenario that using Net Par for holes not played in a 9-hole round could be permissible.  Any rules geek care to describe such a scenario?

Bonus question to ask me next time we meet, “Could the EGC request this MEGA MILLIONS Summer 18-hole course be rated by the CGA as a separate course?
