EMGA – Stableford Scoring for OPCs (Proposal)

Dear Members,

The EMGA Board has been considering ways to improve the pace of play while maintaining the enjoyment of the game. Under traditional stroke play, players must hole out on every hole to post a valid score, even when facing high scores. We considered implementing a maximum-stroke-per-hole rule (doesn't align well with standard stroke play) or continuing to either penalize or enforce mandatory ball pickups, but those seem to be ineffective or causing ill-will.

Consequently, we are exploring transitioning OPCs from stroke play to Stableford scoring, a format that has gained widespread popularity in leagues globally. Tournament scoring will continue to vary depending on each tournament format. Stableford scoring in OPCs offers three key advantages:

1.  Improved Pace of Play: Once a player can no longer score points on a hole (after reaching a net double bogey), they pick up their ball and move to the next hole. This prevents the lengthy delays often caused by a player struggling on a difficult hole.

2.  Mitigated Disaster Holes: In stroke play, one bad hole can ruin an entire scorecard. In Stableford, that hole simply results in zero points, keeping the player competitive for the remainder of the round.

3.  Balanced Handicaps: Net Stableford effectively balances high and low handicappers by rewarding aggressive play without disproportionately penalizing occasional double bogeys (though this may be less significant given our flight-based format).

Importantly, your experience on the course should be better and more enjoyable. All scores under the Stableford format will continue to be posted to GHIN. An initial analysis of past flight standings in OPCs using Stableford scoring indicated minimal changes to the rankings.

To test this approach, the Board proposes using the remaining OPCs after the Kregel tournament, those OPCs in September and October, as a trial period.

Please let us know if you have any serious concerns or feedback regarding this proposal.

Thanks,

Larry Walker, President EMGA

PS.

Stableford scoring:

Net double bogey = 0 points

Net Bogey = 1 point

Net Par = 2 points

Net Birdie = 4 points

Net Eagle = 8 points

Net Double Eagle = 10 points

EMGA: ABCD Shamble Tee Sheet, Alpha List, and Rules

Attached are the Tee Sheet, Alpha List, and Rules for tomorrow's ABCD Shamble, Thurs, 13 Aug, with an 0800 shotgun start on the on the Blue course.

We are short one “D” player.  If your handicap index is 21.0 or higher and you want to play, please send me an email.

Your Foursome GGID is:   (If no number, you are NOT on the Tee Sheet)

Please review the full rules carefully—there are some changes from last year.  The team score is a combination of the best two net scores of any of the team players, based on the format outlined in the rules.  A key change this year is each team will have a Team Captain.  The Team Captain is the A Player.  If any team player reaches the point on a hole where his ball cannot be one of the two best net scores, the Team Captain will ensure that player picks up.  For example, the B and C players have putted out and have net pars.  The A and D players are putting for net bogey.  Since the A and D players cannot have one of the two best net scores, they will pick up, record an “X”, and the team will move to the next hole.  The Team Captain will also ensure no more than 3 minutes is taken to look for a lost ball.  Since this is a Shamble format, no scores will be posted to GHIN.

Unregisted Walk-Ups:

On the day of the tournament, since this is an ABCD event, we will only add walk-up players to the tournament if there is an open slot within the range of the walk-up player’s HC Index.  For example, if an A player walks up with a HC Index of 8, and the only open slots are for D players where the range of HC Indexes is in the upper 20s and 30s, we will not field the A player.

Range Opens:  0630

Sign-in:  0645-0730

Call to carts at 0745

Shotgun start at 0800

If you are scheduled to play and can no longer make it, please let the Tournament Committee know as soon as possible.  If you want to play, please send us an email and we will see if there’s an opening.

The Sign-In tables will be in The Grill and open at 0645.  Please ensure you sign in before 0730 if you want to participate.  The members manning the sign in tables are volunteers and need time themselves to hit the range before call to carts.

Also, if you have not signed in by 0730, you do run the risk of losing your slot to a walk up.  We strongly recommend all players focus on pace of play.  Our goal is to complete the round in less than 4.5 hours.

A TC member will be in the Silver dining room on the second floor of the club house to receive your score cards after play.

Thanks,

Your EMGA Tournament Committee

EMGA Two-Man Scramble Alpha List, Tee Sheet, Rules, and Flights

Attached are the Tee Sheet, Alpha List, Rules, and Flights for tomorrow's Two-Man Scramble, Thurs, 30 Jul, with an 0800 shotgun start on the Blue course, showing your starting hole and pairings.  Flights could change based last minute changes to the player roster.

Your Foursome GGID is:            (If no number, you are NOT on the Tee Sheet)

Range Opens: 0630

Sign-in: 0645-0730

Call to carts at 0745

Shotgun start at 0800

If you are scheduled to play and can no longer make it, please let the Tournament Committee know as soon as possible.

We will be playing team skins, with competition as team vs. flight.  Both team members must participate to be eligible.  Declare your status at sign-in.

We’ll be using Golf Genius Mobile App along with a paper scorecard.  A player from one team will log into Golf Genius using your foursome GGID and keep the electronic score for both teams.  A player from the other team will keep the paper scorecard for both teams.  Record the Gross score for each team.  After the round, compare the scores between the Mobile App and the paper card to ensure they are correct.  One golfer from each team must sign the paper scorecard.  Return the paper scorecard to a Tournament Committee member in the Silver dining room after your round and before you leave the clubhouse area.   Teams with no paper scorecard will be DQ’d for the tournament.  In the event there is a discrepancy between the GG Mobile scorecard and the paper scorecard, the Tournament Committee will use the score marked on the paper scorecard and change the score marked in GG to match the paper scorecard.

The Sign-In tables will be in the Grill area at 0645.  Please ensure you sign in before 0730 if you want to participate.  The members manning the sign in tables are volunteers and need time themselves to hit the range before call to carts.

Also, if you have not signed in by 0730, you run the risk of losing your slot to a walk up

Please focus on pace of play.  If you have an open hole in front of you, you are behind, even if the group behind you is not pushing your group.  Please catch up to the group ahead of you.

Thanks,

Your EMGA Tournament Committee
