2026 Rules & Rules Refresher #10

; -webkit-text-stroke-width:0px; margin-right:0in; margin-left:0in”>

Alleluia!  We’re down to our last question!

I’ll be honest here, participation has really dropped off. We topped out at THIRTY-FIVE participants on Question #2 but we sunk down to just FIFTEEN last week.

So, I thought, perhaps finish up the contest with an easy TRUE-FALSE question so most of you would have a 50-50 chance of getting it right.

But then I thought, nah.

Rule 14 is real ballsy.  It covers when and how to substitute, replace, drop and place the ball back into play and the procedure can depend on which part of the course your ball lies.  If you don’t get it right, you can play a wrong ball from the right place, the right ball from a wrong place, or even a wrong ball from the wrong place!  The penalties can really pile up!

Question #10.  In stroke play, a player accidentally kicks their ball in play that was visible in the general area. The ball's exact original location is not known. The player drops another ball within one club-length of, but not nearer the hole than where it lay and makes their next stroke. The dropped ball does not come to rest on its original spot. The correct ruling is that the player:

A. has no penalty

B. gets one penalty stroke

C. gets two penalty strokes

D. gets three penalty strokes

E. is Disqualified

*******

Question #9.  You need to take penalty relief area for the #$%^! fifth time today and you’re only on hole #4.  You’re already three holes down on your match with that smug, sandbagging buddy of yours.  Your buddy is hovering near you and has a foot in your relief area. You drop the ball properly but it rolls and bounces off your buddy’s foot and comes to rest inside the relief area.  You deem it accidental.  What do you do?

  1. Say a few choice words and redrop
  2. Say more than a few choice words and play it as it lies
  3. Get really pissed since you play it as it lies and you get an additional penalty stroke!
  4. Grin mischievously because your buddy gets a one-stroke penalty and you get to choose to redrop or play it as it lies
  5. Rejoice because your buddy gets the general penalty, loss of hole! And you get to choose to redrop or play it as it lies if you want to finish the hole anyway for handicap purposes

OH No!  This one ruined a perfect score!  Of the FIFTEEN responses, only TEN got the correct answer “B”.  Rule 14.3c (1) Player Has Completed Taking Relief When Ball Dropped in Right Way Comes to Rest in Relief Area is pretty clear on this one. It does not matter whether the ball, after hitting the ground, touches any person, equipment or other outside influence…there is no penalty to any player…if a ball dropped in the right way accidentally hits any person…”

By the way, has an EMGA member ever done this to you?  https://www.youtube.com/shorts/bcCgRb6sZts

EMGA – Open Play Results – 19 Mar 2026

Members,

Here's the results from today's Open Play.  Since it was just an OP, there were no competitions, no flighting, etc.  It was mainly to knock the rust off, which would appear that more rust needs knocking off.  Some tough pin placements and wind conditions.

Please remember to mark on the scorecard the tees you played from, and then double check that you are on the right tees with the Golf Genius app.

We will be posting the scores to GHIN this evening, so if you have any errors, please reply back.

Good to see so many of you back and that you made it through the winter.  Next week will be our first Competition, signups are still open.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  Thanks.

EMGA – OPC Signup Process for 26 March

Members,

Greetings and welcome to the signup for the Thursday, 26 March 2026 Open Play Competition (OPC) to be played on the Silver Course. This will be the first competition of the year, so if you compete in the OPC, $6 will be deducted from your EMGA account.

OPC:  Thursday, 26 March on the Silver Course (first tee time at 0830).

Signups start on Tuesday, 17 March at exactly 1900 hours (7PM).

Players in flight 1 is gross only (opt-in before playing the first hole) and play from white or longer tees.  Players in flight 2 and up can play from any of the teeing areas and can change from week to week.  Please ensure tee selection is entered prior to your start in Golf Genius app and also on the written paper score card.

We will be using the paper scorecard as primary with the Golf Genius app for entering scores to track in the leaderboards.  Also, sign, attest, and drop off the paper scorecard in the men's locker room in the EMGA box.  Only one person is required to keep the score on the mobile scoring app.  Please make sure that the scoring matches on both the paper scorecard and mobile app.

Instructions:

1.  Tee Time reservations will open on Tuesday night at 7PM (1900).

2.  Sign in to the EMGA Portal page (egc-2026emga.golfgenius.com) with your username and password.  The tee sheet will open up exactly at 7:00 PM.  If you enter the site sooner, you may need to refresh your browser before seeing the tee sheet.

3.  On the portal page, go to the Tee Sheet section, and then select “Open Tee Time Registration.”

4.  Select the time you want to play.

5.  You'll be able to sign up as a single, twosome, threesome or foursome.

6.  If signing up for more than just yourself, you'll need to know the names of the other players in advance of making the tee time.  Once a name is added, no other player can select that same person (his name will be grayed out).  When finished signing up, please hit “Done” to save your tee time. You'll receive a confirmation email (it's not immediate, but it does come).

7.  After hitting the “Done” button, if you did not sign up for all four slots, the remaining slots will be open for others.

8.  If you are the initiator of the tee time and have added other players, those players are now “coupled” to you and tied to your reservation.  For a player to “decouple” themselves from the initiator, they need to first Cancel their name from the reservation before selecting any other tee time.  Do not just try to move yourself, you'll still be coupled to the initiator.

9.  When signups have not yet been closed, members can return to the Open Tee Time Registration page to cancel their registration.

10.  Signups close at 6PM on the night two days prior to the OPC.  After that time, if you need to make any changes, please text either John Henninger (719) 237-1700 or Larry Walker (719) 661-2496.

EMGA 2026 Tournament Notes and Declared Tees

Hello EMGA Members, and welcome to the 2026 season.

We’ll continue to use declared tees for tournaments in 2026.  A list of current members and their most recent declared tees for tournaments is below.  If you wish to remain on the same set of tournament tees, no action is required.  If you’d like to change tournament tees, please let me know by 1 May, prior to our first tournament on 7 May.  Once you’ve declared tournament tees for 2026, EMGA allows a member to change his declared tees for tournaments only once during the season.

The longest tees you may declare for tournaments are the White tees.  We surveyed the single-digit HC players at the end of the 2025 season regarding the option to play longer tees for tournaments.  The results were 25% of the players would have preferred to have had the option to declare Blue, Green, or Green/White combo tees; 25% wanted to stay on Whites; and 50% were ok either way.  The Tournament Committee reviewed the results and opted to keep using the White tees as the longest tournament tees, both for pace-of-play and to facilitate a new format for Gross skins this year.

For 2026, Gross skins will be by tee.  White tee players will compete for Gross skins among themselves, White/Gold combo players will compete as a group, and so on for Gold, Gold/Silver combo, and Silver tee players.

Net skins competition will remain by White and Gold Divisions.  As a reminder, White tee and White/Gold tee players are in the White Division; and Gold tee, Gold/Silver tee, and Silver tee players are in the Gold Division.

The Kregel Championship has been moved to just before Labor Day instead of its previous spot in July.  The goal is to make this more of an end-of-season championship instead of having the competition in the middle of the season.  Also, the Kregel Championship flight will compete gross only, and participation in the Championship flight will be voluntary.  All other Kregel flights will compete net only.

For Open Play (OP) and Open Play Competitions (OPCs), there is no requirement to declare tees, and you may change tees from week to week.  If you’re unsure which tees you’d like to declare for tournaments, please experiment with the different tee options prior to 1 May, and let me know your declared tournament tees by then.

Thanks,

Ron

2026 EMGA Rules & Rules Refresher #9

; -webkit-text-stroke-width:0px; margin-right:0in; margin-left:0in”>

Last week’s Question #8 separated the men from the boys.  Even if you didn’t play the game, please read my elucidation below.

And based on these results, this subject, taking relief, is not quite dead yet.   https://www.youtube.com/shorts/58N1WWsrH0I

Rule 14.3 Dropping Ball in Relief Area stipulates what ball (original or replacement) can be used, how to drop it properly (knee height, etc.), have it come to rest in the relief area, and if it touches anything but the ground.  Cue Question #9.

**********

Question #8.  Your ball lies just off the 2-ft wide putting green fringe and about a foot from two sprinkler heads located just off the fringe as well.  There is no interference to your ball, stance or any intended swing.  If you choose to putt, the sprinkler heads are in your Line of Play.  If you choose to chip, you’ll take a different line so that the sprinkler heads are not in the Line of Play.  If you have one, where is your Relief Area from all interference?

a. You don’t have one, you’re screwed.

b. From the nearest point of relief, you create a one-club radius semi-circle, no closer to the hole. The relief area can only include the rough.

c. From the nearest point of relief, you create a one-club radius semi-circle, no closer to the hole. The relief area can only include the rough and fringe.

d. From the nearest point of relief, you create a one-club radius semi-circle, no closer to the hole. The relief area can include the rough, fringe and putting green.

e. From the nearest point of relief, you create a two-club radius semi-circle, no closer to the hole. The relief area includes the rough, fringe and putting green.

f. From the nearest point of relief, you create a two-club radius semi-circle, no closer to the hole. The relief area can only include the rough and fringe.

g. From the nearest point of relief, you create a two-club radius semi-circle, no closer to the hole. The relief area can only include the rough.

Oh, boy…and not in a good way.  This one proved brutal.  Of the TWENTY who responded, only EIGHT answered with the correct response: “c”.  To answer this correctly:

  1.  You had to deduce that the ball was in the General Area.  (Recall there is the General Area and four specific areas, one of which is the green.)  General area includes fairway, rough and fringe.
  2. So, Rule 16.1b Relief for Ball in General Area covers how you take relief if you’re allowed to with this particular Abnormal Course Condition, Immovable Obstruction, the sprinkler heads.  It clearly states that the relief area must only be in the general area so the green can’t be included in the relief area.  And it’s only one club length for Free Relief, not two.  (The only time you get a two-club length relief area is when you take Lateral Relief from a Penalty Area or an Unplayable Ball.)
  3. EGC implemented Model Local Rule F-5 that gives you relief if
    1. the sprinkler heads are on your line of play
    2. the sprinkler heads are within 2 club lengths of the green
    3. and the sprinkler head are within 2 club lengths of the ball
  4. So, since the sprinkler heads are just off the 2-foot wide fringe and the sprinkler heads are foot away from your ball, all the F-5 conditions are met

Folks, I can’t lie, it’s a tight race to the finish.  Would you believe there are still a few with a perfect score?!

EMGA – Balances

Members,

This is your current EMGA balance as of today. Because we have not yet played an OPC or a tournament with optional skins, your balance simply reflects what you have paid in minus any season‑long tournament entry fees you elected to participate in. If you are tracking your own balance—and it’s strongly encouraged—these numbers should match.

When you play in an OPC ($6) or a tournament that offers optional skins ($5), those amounts will be deducted from your balance. Updated balances will be sent after each event so you can keep your records current.

A balance shown in yellow means you have dropped below $20. A balance in red means you are under $5. If you plan to continue playing in OPCs or entering skins, you’ll need to add funds before the next event so your account can cover the expected costs.

If your account does not have enough funds, you may still play in the event itself, but you will not be eligible to compete in an OPC or tournament skins until your balance is replenished.

Additional funds can be added by dropping off a check in the EMGA box or mailing it to our treasurer:

John Hayes
5190 Farmingdale Drive
Colorado Springs, CO 80917

For members who have not yet paid their annual dues, please note that after April 1 you will be removed from the roster. If you don't plan on returning, then please let us know. If you choose to rejoin later, you may do so by sending in your payment.

If you have any questions or do not agree with your balance, please let me know.  Thanks.

EMGA – Handicap Index Update

Members,

If you have a NH in the handicap index column it means that you have not yet renewed your GHIN.  As a reminder, you must have an active GHIN number before you can compete in any of the EMGA events. Eisenhower is pretty good about activating your GHIN within a day or two.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks.

2026 EMGA Rules & Rules Refresher #8

; -webkit-text-stroke-width:0px”>FORE!

This week’s question uses one of the USGA Model Local Rules that the Eisenhower Golf Club has implemented, namely F-5 Immovable Obstructions Close to Putting Greens.  I’m talking those sprinkler heads.

The sprinkler heads are an Immovable Obstruction which is one of four defined Abnormal Course Conditions (the other three are Animal HoleGround Under Repair, and Temporary Water).

Rule 16 Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions allows for Free Relief (Yay!) if the condition interferes with your ball, stance, intended swing and if the ball is on the green, you also get relief for your Line of Play (ex: temporary water on the green).  The Committee (aka Eisenhower Golf Club) can implement a Local Rule if the Abnormal Course Condition interferes with Line of Play if the ball is off the green.  Which it did.

So, can you take relief from a sprinkler head just off the putting green fringe?

**********

Question #7.

On Blue #12, Par 4, there has been a sprinkler malfunction that has filled up the back green side bunker with water.  And that’s where you find yourself after sculling a wedge from 120 yards out.  You choose the back-on-line relief option that has you dropping outside the bunker, no nearer the hole.  What is the penalty, if any?

  1. No penalty
  2. One stroke
  3. Two strokes

Uh-Oh.  Of the TWENTY-FOUR that responded, only TWELVE answered correctly with “b. One stroke”.  Rule 16.1c Relief from Abnormal Course Condition in Bunker makes it clear that if you drop outside the bunker, it’s one penalty stroke. Under Rule 19.3 Relief Options for Unplayable Ball in Bunker, it’s a two stroke penalty if the back-on-the-line option is outside the bunker.
