Sign Up Process – 17 April 2025

Members,

Greetings and welcome to the 17 April Open Play Competition (OPC) of the EMGA 2025 season.

Reminder, we are using the Golf Genius tee time system, Open Tee Time™ Registration, for making tee times for our OPC and not the Eisenhower Club Prophet System (CPS).

OPCs are open to all EMGA members, competitive, and the cost is $6.00 ($4.00 for stroke play, $1.00 for net skins, and $1 for gross skins). Correct change is appreciated.

New for 2025, Players can play from any of the teeing areas on any given Thursday and can change from week to week.  Please ensure tee selection is entered prior to your start in Golf Genius (on the scoring mobile phone) and also on the written paper score card.

We will be using the Mobile Scoring app as the primary scorecard with a paper scorecard for backup.  Also, sign, attest, and drop off the paper scorecard in the men’s locker room in the EMGA box.  Only one person is required to keep the score on the mobile scoring app.  Please make sure that the scoring on the mobile app matches that on the paper scorecard.

OPC:  Thursday, 17 April, Blue course (first tee time at 0800).

Sign Ups start on Tuesday, 8 April exactly at 1900 (7PM).

VOLUNTEER Opportunity for OPCs. Looking for members who can assist with starter duties for 2025.  See John or Ron to sign up. Thank You!

Instructions:

1.  Tee Time reservations will open on Tuesday night at 7PM (1900), 9-days prior to the OP/OPC.

2.  Sign in to the EMGA Portal page (egc-2025emga.golfgenius.com) with your username and password.  The tee sheet will open up exactly at 7:00 PM.  If you enter the site sooner, you may need to refresh your browser before seeing the tee sheet.

3.  On the portal page, go to the Tee Sheet section, and then select “Open Tee Time Registration.”

4.  Select the time you want to play.

5.  You’ll be able to sign up as a single, twosome, threesome or foursome.

6.  If signing up for more than just yourself, you’ll need to know the names of the other players in advance of making the tee time.  Once a name is added, no other player can select that same person (his name will be grayed out).  When finished signing up, please hit “Done” to save your tee time. You’ll receive a confirmation email (it’s not immediate, but it does come).

7.  After hitting the “Done” button, if you did not sign up for all four slots, the remaining slots will be open for others.

8.  If you are the initiator of the tee time and have added other players, those players are now “coupled” to you and tied to your reservation.  For a player to “decouple” themselves from the initiator, they need to first Cancel their name from the reservation before selecting any other tee time.  Do not just try to move yourself, you’ll still be coupled to the initiator.

9.  When signups have not yet been closed, members can return to the Open Tee Time Registration page to cancel their registration.

10.  Signups close at 6PM on Tuesday night prior to the OPC.  After that time, if you need to make any changes, please text either Ron Black (303) 918-8702, John Henninger (719) 237-1700, or Larry Walker (719) 661-2496.

Secretary Position Opening

Members,

Sam Bryant, our current Secretary, is stepping down at the end of this season when his term expires.  As EMGA VP, I am beginning the search now for his replacement to take over in 2026.

While the job is not that complex, we would prefer anyone interested to shadow Sam over the 2025 season.

If this is something you think you would be interesting in volunteering for, please let both Sam and myself know.

Sam – [email protected]

Myself – [email protected]

Thank you in advance for helping continue EMGA’s reputation as a top notched organization.

2025 Home & Away League Announcement

Golf Genius –

Gentlemen,

This email announces the start of the 2025 EMGA Home & Away (H&A) season. Each year your H&A Committee coordinates with other golf clubs to set up friendly matches on courses we might not otherwise have the opportunity to play. We encourage you to review the below schedule and sign up to play in the matches you are interested in. Please review the schedule carefully because there is both a “Home” and an “Away” match, and when you sign up, you are committing to play in both rounds. We will create 12–20-man teams for each match from those that sign up and play a Home match at Eisenhower and an Away match at the hosted course. During a H&A match, we try to all wear the same color shirt so we will be identified as a team. There are three EMGA colored (red, white, and blue) shirts available for purchase through Don Becker, another longtime member of the EMGA. We like it if you have the EMGA logo shirts, but they are not mandatory.  You can wear whatever shirt you have, but please try to wear one in the same color as the rest of the team.

Typically, the host team pays all the costs to play at their club, except for the Skins match, which costs $5.00 for each player. The cost to play in a H&A match (both at Eisenhower and the Away club) should be around $145, but the costs have not been finalized yet this year and may vary a little. This fee covers the cost of both you and your guest and pays for your guest’s green fees, the cart, range balls, breakfast snack, lunch, prize money, hole-in-one, and your entry in the Skins competition. If you are not an Annual Green Fee Member, you will also need to pay your green fees prior to the match. There will usually be some sort of light breakfast snack provided and range balls will be available at the course prior to play. After the match, the host club will provide lunch while the scores are tabulated, and winners determined. At the end of the lunch, prizes will be awarded for best ball play and skins winners. Points will be awarded to the teams based on play and these points will determine which club wins the match.

Signups for these matches are now open in Golf Genius.  If you’re interested in playing, please go to the EMGA H&A Portal Page, egc-2025ha.golfgenius.com sign in with your username and password, and select the H&As showing on the left-hand side of the opening page under Upcoming Rounds.  By selecting the Home date for that course, you’re signing up for both the Home and Away dates. You may notice our matches are on the same dates as many of our OPC matches and you can receive “credit” for the OPC, the appropriate Ringer and the Ike Cup when you play in the H&A match too, so don’t let these conflicts deter you from playing in the H&As. During H&A matches, we will only play from either the White or Gold tees. Please note there are two matches that are slightly different. The “Away” Heritage Eagle Bend match, scheduled for Tuesday, 5 August, will be a Shotgun start at 1230. Also, regarding the Broadmoor match, we will only play the “Home” match this year, and it will be played on Tuesday, 2 September.  The “Away” match will be scheduled sometime in 2026.

We will also send reminders/invitations for the individual H&A matches 3-4 weeks ahead of each match, so you will have more opportunities throughout the season to sign up.  The H&A Committee will select the team members 2-3 weeks before the match, so everyone will know whether they will play or not. If you’re not selected for a match, you will have priority for the next match you wish to play in.  We want to make sure everyone who wants to play gets an opportunity to do so.

If you have any questions, please contact Barry Patterson ([email protected]) or Abe Oros ([email protected]).

Playing Combo Tees

FORE!

Two emails in one day?  Yep. Had to get this out before our first OPC.

OPC Tees

The Good News is that you get to pick’em: play the same all season or change weekly.

You’ll declare your tees upon check in with the OPC starter and mark it on your scorecard:  Black, Blue, Green, Green/White, White, White/Gold, Gold, Gold/Silver, Silver.

The Bad News is that you can change weekly.  Say what?  The bad part of this is that if you start the hole on the wrong tee box, it’s two-stroke penalty and if not corrected, it’s a DQ.  Ouch.

For 2025 OPCs, EMGA members are eligible to use the new Blue Course Gold/Silver Combination and Silver tee sets as well as the same on the Silver Course.  We’ll have to wait a bit for an updated EGC Blue Course Scorecard and EGC App but the USGA GHIN app has been updated.

Also, please note that the Silver Course Gold/Silver combination has a unique tee on holes #6, #8, #12, #14, and #17. They’re marked by the old round tee markers with Gold and Silver painted tops.

Tournament Tees

So, for tournaments, we all had to declared tees at season start.

Here’s how the numbers stand for each tee:

Silver- none

Gold/Silver – 3

Gold – 78

White/Gold – 5

White – 102

Rule 6 Playing the Hole has the details but the short answer is in OPC Stroke Play, playing outside the teeing area is two penalty strokes and requires you to re-tee it, start the hole over again and you are hitting your third shot.  If you don’t catch yourself before making a stroke to start the next hole, it’s a DQ

Choose wisely my friends,

2025 EMGA Rules Refresher Winners!

FORE!

The Results are in!

We had 30 contestants that played the game but not all played each week.  We did have two players with perfect scores:  President Larry Walker and Vice President Don Knight Unfortunately for them, due to Competition Rule 3, Section 5, Paragraph C, Subparagraph 3.4 (ii), the Pres and VP are not eligible to win the final award. (aka the fine print).

So, we had three players with 9 correct answers, Patrick Burke, Don Becker and Charles Couch.  They’ll split the $30 prize, $10 each; it’ll be deposited in their pro shop account soon.

Honorable mention goes to Sam Bryant and Rosario Nici for having 8 correct responses.

Some notes from the competition…

  • We had a total of 30 EMGA players respond thru out the competition
  • On question #1 (accidently moving your ball marker), all 17 respondents got it correct
  • Question #5 (temp water on green relief) had the most replies, with 18 of 25 getting it correct
  • Rules Refresher #5 email also had the most views, thank you Paige Spiranac!
  • Ever respondent got at least one question correct with one exception.  He tried once and was never heard from again!
  • However, don’t get too cocky, nine contestants only got one question correct!
  • And we had 10 individual winners for the weekly prize, no one won twice.

Weekly Winner Prize
Don Becker I’m Retired Ask Somebody Else
Terry Bennett The Legend has Retired
Sam Bryant It’s All in the Hips Lesson
Patrick Burke  Let’s Par-Tee
Charles Couch Shooter
Rick Horn He Shoots,  He Scores
Tim Marburger Officially Retired
Rosario Nici Golf is My Retirement Plan
Ken Pearson It’s all in the Hips
Geo Roberts The Price is Wrong

So, our last question was this:

Rules Refresher Quiz #10.

Q10. In stroke play, a player substitutes a ball when dropping to take relief from temporary water. The original ball was immediately recoverable. What is the ruling if they have not yet made a stroke at the dropped ball?

a. The player must mark the substituted ball, lift it and place the original ball on the spot where the substituted ball lay.

b. The player must lift the substituted ball and drop the original ball.

c. The player must play the substituted ball as it lies.

The correct answer is “c”.  You are allowed to substitute your original ball when taking free or penalty relief.  So, in this scenario, that is why “c” is correct, the substituted ball becomes the ball in play as soon as it is dropped.  Conversely,  Rule 14 also states that, “When a lifted or moved ball is to be replaced, the same ball must be set down on its original spot.”

And the winner is… Geo Roberts!

Prize:  The Price is Wrong!

Hit’em straight but not too often,

EMGA – 27 March Open Play

Golf Genius –

Members,

We had 70 players for today’s Open Play on the Silver course.  Scores from today were posted in GHIN.  Hopefully everyone was able to knock off the rust.  We worked through some technical issues, but everything seems to be working OK.

Next week, 3 Apr is an Open Play Competition (OPC) on the Blue course.  There are currently 95 players signed up and the weather is currently forecasted for the mid-50s.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  Thanks.
